Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art developed by the founder, Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969; often referred to by his title “O-Sensei”).  The Japanese word Aikido consists of three characters which can be translated as “the way (“do”) to harmonize (“ai”) with the life force or energy (“ki”) of the universe”.  A subtle and sophisticated martial art, Aikido is ethically linked to self defense against an unprovoked attack.  Believing violence to be senseless, O-Sensei created Aikido not only as means of self defense, but as a way to resolve conflict, celebrate life and manifest the spirit of loving protection for all beings. In the words of O-Sensei – the aim of Aikido is "...to unify the mind and body and to promote peace, harmony and cooperation among all beings”.

Aikido applies effective martial techniques in a unique and non-competitive way.  Students of Aikido train with a partner, alternating as attacker and the one who receives the attack. Rather than injure or harm the attacker with kicks or punches, the student is taught to blend with, redirect and transform the attacker’s energy, safely and effectively. The student is also taught how to take ukemi (the art of falling or receiving technique).

Aikido is a “way” to develop one’s physical, mental and spiritual potential and is practiced by people of all ages, regardless of size or strength. Through Aikido, it is possible to achieve a sense of well-being that promotes a more balanced and healthy lifestyle.  Most of all, Aikido is fun and exciting to do.
